Note that there are 2 different ways to use the cannery!
Option 1 : You can rent the entire facility by the hour, make your food product and just pay for the time that you are there. You are in charge of your own production, supplies, and planning.
Option 2: You can hire our staff to make your food product for you. This is called co-packing and Virginia Food Works is responsible for production. This is an ideal option for a farmer who wants to drop off excess strawberries for us to make her an amazing spicy strawberry jam.
Option 1: Commercial Kitchen Rental Rates
In an effort to promote agribusiness, Prince Edward County is providing very reasonable rates to commercial clients of the cannery. Rental fees of the commercial kitchen are as follows:
- Residents of Prince Edward County pay $10.00 an hour
- Residents of other counties included in the Tobacco Indemnification and Community Revitalization Commission pay $16.00 an hour
- Other area residents/businesses using at least one Virginia grown/produced ingredient pay $20.00 an hour
- Other area residents/businesses using no Virginia grown/produced ingredients pay $25.00 an hour

Option 2: Co-Packing Rates
Per Unit Rate: Tried and true recipes such as traditional jams can be priced per unit produced. The $3.05 Per Unit Rate includes all processing expenses such as staff, a 9-ounce glass container, facility rental, insurance, and ingredients such as sugar, pectin, and lemon juice. Fruit and label not included. Minimum quantities depend on product, contact us for more details.
Hourly Rate: For new recipes we charge an hourly rate which includes four experienced staff members, facility rental, utilities, and insurance. A minimum of four hours is required. Costs for all containers and ingredients are billed separately. Tobacco Commission residents will receive a 3.5% discount on the hourly rate.
Hourly rates range from $65 per hour to $125 per hour, depending on the number of Virginia Food Works’ staff members needed for production. There is a $5 per hour discount if at least one Virginia grown/produced ingredient is utilized in the recipe.
Cold and Freezer Storage Rates
Virginia Food Works offers one walk-in fridge and two walk-in freezers for short and long term storage. Contact us for rental rates specific to your needs.
